Research & Unit Operations Labs Northeastern University

The College of Engineering project for Faculty Research Labs and Unit Operations Lab is located on three floors of the Mugar Life Science Building. Beginning with a workshop process, the design team engaged with faculty and engineering administrators in establishing research needs, defining workflows, and developing equipment and chemical quantity lists for the diverse programs.  Our close collaborations led to highly flexible laboratory environments – designed from a common kit of parts – that are tailored to individual research group needs.  As an example, the design for highly adaptable overhead service carriers maximizes both access for distributing services to future equipment locations and visual openness.

Existing low ceilings were removed in each of the wet labs to expose the high existing concrete waffle slab structure – increasing the flexibility for adapting services to evolving equipment needs, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and natural light, and establishing a common aesthetic. With additional laboratory projects anticipated within the building, the design team developed standards and details as templates for future renovations.
