The Countdown to the EF Education First Opening Begins!

Wilson Architects had the great privilege of working with the wonderful team at EF Education First on its new North American headquarters in North Point, Cambridge.  EF -a global leader in language training, international education, and cultural exchange- will mark its move into the new building with an opening celebration on October 16th.

As architect-of-record, we enjoyed collaborating with Skanska and Wingardh Arkitektkontor AB of Sweden in executing the design, and are proud of the high quality spaces, the incorporation of sustainable design throughout, and the innovations supporting a new workplace culture. We have benefited from the efforts of so many of the individual architects and designers in our studio, as well as the consulting engineers of the many design disciplines who contributed to the success of the project.

The new 290,000 square foot headquarters will be home to more than 900 employees, and will include three levels of parking, a restaurant and terrace, and a signature glass “waterfall” façade facing North Point Park. Organized around the principles of open planning and connectivity, the building includes a dramatic ten-story atrium, staggered two-story meeting areas, social ‘water bars’, and a double-height 200 person auditorium with stepped seating. The fabric of the office floor plates is woven into 20 person teams, with conveniently placed meeting areas.

With sustainability as a major project priority, the building is designed as LEED Silver certifiable and includes ‘green’ features to reduce energy consumption by 24%, including:

  • Under floor air distribution for control at each desk
  • Condensing boilers and other high efficiency mechanical equipment
  • High performance glazing
  • LED lighting and daylight harvesting
  • Rain gardens and water recycling
  • Bicycle facilities and electric car charging stations

EF is celebrating the opening with a day of events, including a ribbon cutting ceremony and remarks by Governor Deval Patrick.
